About
History
Southern Sound Hospital Radio was launched at the Southern General Hospital on 25th April 1995 by Alistair McCoist MBE of Rangers Football Club.
It was formerly known as Centre Hospital Radio at Philipshill Hospital. That service was launched in May 1974 by Steve Jones, morning presenter with Radio Clyde. Philipshill Hospital was a centre for Spinal Injuries and, when the hospital closed in 1992, we moved to the Southern General Hospital where the National Spinal Unit would open.
There followed many months of work before the new service opened. After a few years we moved to other studios in the main hospital building.
On the building of the new Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, we moved to our fourth home at external studios one mile from the hospital.
What We Do
Studios 1 & 2 are self-drive broadcast studios. Studio 3 is a digital server and provides our 24/7 service.
The station is run by volunteers of all ages. Volunteer.
Request can be made online. Click Requests.
Our programmes cover music from the last six decades, special features, local news, competitions, news magazines & some great chat.
Our aim is to provide a professional personalised service to hospitals in Glasgow.
We survey our listeners and build our programmes around that profile and requested records.
We are regularly involved in the community and we can be seen on an open top double decker at the Govan Fair and appear at Braeview Shopping Centre.
